Curvy – A right angle break

The always recurring and assertive aesthetic of the 70s of the last century is still alive and kicking. Not only that, but it returns cyclically with even more vitality. At this moment, it imposes itself and not only on the catwalks, but also in interior decoration, where every now and then, it enters through the big door, as is the case. In addition to the recovery of some of its favorite colors – yellow, orange, blues and saturated browns –, 2022 has seen the return of curved lines, rounded shapes, mainly in wooden furniture, but consistently in any piece of decoration or type of material, and even in architectural projects, all of them around curvilinear lines. It is the well-deserved rest from the rigid right angle, the ruler and the square.

According to the compasses beat

Inexhaustible source of inspiration, for the revolutionary artistic and cultural creativity and for the social advances that it conquered in terms of individual freedoms, due to movements that brandished slogans as seductive as equality and freedom, the 70s keep a captive place in our hearts, where all this echoes the sound of Motown, but also of London punk. Armstrong's soft footsteps on the lunar surface still echoed in the minds of Humanity, and Major Tom, by David Bowie, was setting off on an adventure into outer space, which we tutored like children on a new toy. Those were explosive, gaudy years, excessive in the size of the collars, platforms and bell-bottoms, but also in the desire to do more and differently. Perhaps that is why we are culturally indebted to everything that was dared, artistically, socially and culturally in this psychedelic and absurdly productive decade.

Let's take a turn

One of the echoes that resonates in interior decoration these days is related to the curvilinear layout. It is manifested in the noble wood, always so humble and receptive to any proposal, and is replicated in fashion and in architecture itself, where everything is available to give that great curve, circumventing the rigidity of the right angle and filing any and all edges. Contours are softened, shapes are smoothen, environments become more ergonomic, movements are streamlined.

More 'understanding' and friendly, the curvilinear line harmonizes with the handling, movements and wanderings of the users of the objects and the inhabitants and regulars of the spaces. Everything becomes more inviting, more natural and in keeping with nature's own architecture, where angles are exceptions that erosion, winds and rain – armed arms of the natural universe – rush to soften and polish. In this dynamic that makes the apology of the uninterrupted fluidity of the materials, softness and freedom of movement are gained. The gaze itself runs faster over curvilinear surfaces, without the tiring doldrums of the straight out of sight.

Vintage spirit

In this, also cyclical journey through past aesthetics, a certain vintage spirit persists. A recycling that recovers timeless pieces, whose design quality – measured by its ability to remain current, functional and beautiful over time – remains intact and desirable. A look of respect for everything that was well done and that must be preserved or replicated. As in fashion, even rags can be updated, as long as the materials are of quality, resistant and well-crafted. The product of the work of a good seamstress or an expert carpenter does not wear out over time, even when fashion trys to describe it as démodé. Just wait another season, maybe change some buttons or knobs, because quality never goes out of style.

Around and around

The future is made up of reinterpretations of the past, to which it adds its own vision and innovative character. Hence, everything appears fresh, revised and updated, like any new version of a computer program. The new twists in the design recover the circular undulation, but give it timeliness and novelty. More suited to the shape of the human body, the volumetry born of curvilinear features promotes comfort and fills the eyes with voluptuousness. You feel like running your hand along the smooth contours, walking down a dancing corridor and going up some spiral staircase. There is more music on the curve, more rhythm and more notes in a winding path and that is why it is so much more desirable for daily living.

There are no straight lines in a forest, no right angles in the branches of a tree, no square shells. Around us, in Nature, everything flows like water, everything is guided by cycles and circles that are repeated, molding itself to the conveniences, seasons, moods and the very turns of the planet in its elliptical round around the Sun. There is still a perception of purity and perfection, since nothing seems so right, correct, perfect, natural and spontaneous as a circle, even if imperfect. This is how the new houses and new design pieces are, more respectful of natural flows, more molded by hand, to the body and freedom of movement. Will you go around?
